Big County Chorus

Keith Rayner - Chairman
Big County Chorus

The Chorus sing songs from different eras, but always in the barbershop style, that is male voice, four part close harmony acapella. They range from love songs of days gone by, to more up to date songs made popular by so called ‘pop groups.’ In fact something to suit everyone. We sing songs such as the Beatle’s ‘Let it be’ and Elvis’s ‘Wonder of you,’ along with ‘Danny Boy and ‘Wonderful World’ and traditional barbershop standards.

Our constant aim is to improve our standard of singing and build the club numbers up. New blood is always needed and encouraged. Music, learning tapes or CDs plus uniforms for stage and performance are provided. There is also a modest subscription.

The Club rehearse every Monday evening, starting at 7.30pm at Rawdon Conservative Club, Leeds Road, Rawdon, Leeds - you do not need an invitation!

If you would like to see and hear what we do, then come along, and if you would like to join us, or maybe book us for a forthcoming event, talk to any member who will point you in the right direction.

The Big County Chorus has revived its 'magazine' TYKE'S TATTLE' and copies are available on request.'

At the AGM Barbershopper of the year was won by Geoff Mott, who is our newish secretary, doing a great job, and 'Most Improved Singer', Harry Ambler who after 20 odd years as a baritone now sings lead and tenor.

The chorus is developing a two hour show with guest performers to liven the mix, and this seems to work quite well.

Over the past few months we have welcomed a goodly number of new members who are now established and singing.

Our aim is to begin competing at convention again, and in the meantime are entering local music festivals with much success.

Bill with Sandra Landey, Howard Myers, George Stansfield and Clive Landey

The Big County Chorus welcomed our Association Chairman, Bill Harvey, to their rehearsal and club night mid February. He joined us on the risers and met many new members as well as greeting some ‘old’ members of the chorus, including George Stansfield, an ex-association chairman and Clive Landey one time Big County MD.

There was some time spent in discussion with a question/answer session when Bill passed on up to date information about the Association and future plans.
